The College of Education at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) is offering a Family Literacy Engagement Program for the 2020-2021 school year. This program is free of charge to both parents/caregivers and children.
Parent sessions will consist of UCA faculty and staff providing virtual literacy training to parents and caregivers twelve times throughout the year. Each session will be one hour in length. The focus of these sessions will be on helping parents/caregivers learn teaching strategies that they can use to help their children succeed in school and ways of promoting a love of literacy for the rest of their lives.
Students attending kindergarten through sixth grade will also have the opportunity to participate in virtual learning activities. Pre-service teachers from the UCA will conduct engaging social and emotional learning (SEL) and literacy activities weekly for students. Each session will be 30 minutes in length. The pre-service teachers will facilitate learning opportunities to cultivate students’ interest in learning more about their emotions and how to manage them. In addition, the students will learn ways to show empathy for others, build and maintain strong relationships, and make responsible choices in their homes, schools, and communities.
