University of Central Arkansas student Colleen Weidman was named a recipient of a 2017-18 James G. Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship in the amount of $2,000.
The James G. Stemler Study Abroad Scholarships are awarded to Alpha Lambda Delta members who are pursuing credit-bearing study abroad programs to enhance their academic studies.
Weidman was one of 10 individuals nationally to receive this scholarship award.
“Without all of the opportunities I have had so far at UCA and things I have learned, I would not have been nearly as strong of a competitor for this scholarship,” Weidman said.
The Fort Smith native traveled to Costa Rica from May 28 to July 2. While there, she lived with a host family, volunteered with a local organization and attended Spanish classes.
Weidman is a junior majoring in health sciences with an emphasis in physical therapy. Her minors are Spanish and Honors Interdisciplinary Studies.
“This scholarship is allowing me to become closer to reaching my goal of becoming bilingual. I have personally seen the great need for professionals to be bilingual, specifically in health care,” she said.
