What is GEAR UP Arkansas
The GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) Partnership is funded by the US Department of Education to increase the college-going rate of low-income secondary school students in these school systems. GEAR UP ARKANSAS COLLEGE READY NAVIGATOR (GUAR-CRN) provides training and support for students, families, administrators and teachers at secondary schools with a majority of low-income students to support teachers and provide assistance directly to students to enhance preparation for post-secondary education.
The GEAR UP Arkansas College Ready Navigator (GUAR-CRN) project, facilitated by the University of Central Arkansas, improves academic opportunities, access, and outcomes for Arkansas students. The seven-year project is a cohort model that begins with sixth and seventh grades at 15 middle schools and will provide services to the 6th-grade cohort of students through 12th grade and the 7th-grade cohort through their freshman year of college. GUAR-CRN targets four areas of the state that combine urban and rural poverty. Pulaski, Mississippi, Lee, Monroe, Phillips, Hempstead, and Ouachita Counties are the GUAR-CRN counties.
