First Generation Summer Academy

The application process has ended. Interviews are scheduled for May 12th and 13th and will be held via Zoom. Please check your email for interview information.

Take your F1RST UCA class with other F1RST-GEN students!

The First-Generation Summer Academy is an opportunity for First-Generation students to develop the tools needed to be successful at UCA before the Fall semester begins. The students who participate in this virtual program will earn college credit by completing the ACAD 1103 “Academic Strategies for College Success” course, develop success-centered behaviors through Academic Success Workshops and other events, and build relationships with campus leaders and peers.

A First-Generation student is defined as a student whose parents or caregivers do not have a degree from a four-year institution or college. At UCA we call these students UCA F1RSTs! It’s a major accomplishment to be the first in your family to obtain a college degree, and we want to help you make this transition smooth and rewarding.

Because of the nature of the program and funding limitations, only 20 students will be selected to participate in the 2021 First-Generation Summer Academy. In order to be considered for the program, each student must submit an application by April 30th, 2021. Semi-finalists will then be invited to interview with students and staff from the Office of Student Success.  If selected, students will be expected to:

  1. Enroll in and successfully complete ACAD 1103 during the Summer II session (July 6 – August 6, 2021)
  2. Attend all class sessions (Monday, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, 11:00 am – 11:50 am)
  3. Attend Academic Success Workshops (Thursdays at 11 am)
  4. Participate in activities and events hosted by UCA’s F1RSTs Student Organization
  5. Participate in events throughout the Fall and Spring semesters

This program is FREE to students selected to participate, thanks to generous funding from Coca Cola and the University’s food service, Aramark! We cover tuition, costs of books, and waive all other fees associated with the program.
