*Now Scheduling* On-site Biometric Screenings for BeWell Insurance Discount

If you are currently enrolled in UCA’s health insurance, you are eligible to participate in BeWell’s no cost, confidential on-site biometric health screenings. The screening takes less than 15 minutes and is one of two activities to complete in order to qualify for a discount on your health insurance premiums in 2024. On-site screenings will be offered through October 13, 2023.
To schedule your screening at the UCA Student Health Clinic, call (501) 450-3136 or use the online patient portal.
Patients must fast at least 4 hours and hydrate prior to the screening. Review BeWell Biometric Screening FAQs prior to scheduling.

Why participate?
During the screening process, employees discover unknown health concerns such as high blood pressure, diabetes and some types of cancer. In addition to promoting the well-being of faculty and staff, screenings are the main strategy used to mitigate financial risk to UCA’s self-insured health plan. By participating in annual screenings, you are doing your part to help minimize increases to your health insurance premiums.

Folkloric Dance of Mexico Coming to Reynolds

Reynolds Performance Hall is proud to present Folkloric Dance of Mexico as part of the Dia del Grito Festival in Conway on September 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Presented by the Collaborative Institute of Cultural Arts Chicago (CICA), this colorful show will have authentic costumes, spectacular set pieces along with amazing music and dance. With a cast of over thirty-two dancers, including CICA youth and main folkloric dancers, this event will bring a beautiful display of Mexican culture to Conway showcasing a walk through Mexico’s rich and vibrant festivities.

The Collaborative Institute of Cultural Arts Chicago is a non-profit organization which focuses on providing quality performing arts education to youth and adults through cultural arts, including Mexican folkloric dance and music. The group has traveled the world performing in Greece, Spain, Portugal, France and more.

Public Appearances executive director, Amanda Horton, said “this show will celebrate the unique and beautiful Mexican culture through traditional costume, music and dance. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience a spectacular show and support our Main Stage Education Series.” Folkloric Dance of Mexico is a benefit performance for the Reynolds Main Stage Education Series which brings children from all over the state to the UCA campus to see professional touring shows. Main Stage events are both educational and entertaining and scheduled during the school day for student field trips.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for UCA campus community and $10 for children/students. Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased at the Reynolds Box Office Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., online at uca.edu/reynolds or by calling 501-450-3265. SURF Grant Program Webinar – Including New Submission Guidelines

The Student Undergraduate Research Fellowship program, offered by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, provides undergraduate students in Arkansas an opportunity to develop a sustained relationship with a faculty member (over the course of one, two, or three semesters) to carry out in-depth research, scholarship, or creative projects. All majors are invited to apply.

This workshop on September 13, 2023 @ 2:00 PM is for students and faculty mentors who plan to submit a SURF proposal this fall. Please note that there are new submission guidelines this year, so please make it a point to attend if at all possible; attending the webinar does not obligate you to apply for a grant.

SURF proposals are due in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs by no later than October 18 at 4:00 p.m.

Lorraine Duso Kitts publishes music for bassoon and piano

Dr. Lorraine Duso Kitts, Professor of Music, publishes The Prayer and Printemps, a Paraphrase, two arrangements for bassoon and piano.
Two beautiful violincello and piano compositions written by famous composers, Claude Debussy and Ernst Bloch are now available for bassoonists to perform on their recitals. The music was originally written for cello and piano, and Dr. Lorraine Duso Kitts transcribed both compositions for bassoon. The first piece, The Prayer by Ernst Bloch, is a free-flowing piece designed for high school or college bassoon students. The second piece is called Printemps, a Paraphrase by Claude Debussy. Printemps (Spring time) is a little more complicated because Claude Debussy had originally written Printemps for orchestra.
These two works were discovered by Dr. Duso Kitts in the library bins of the late Loren Glickman, a legendary bassoonist, composer, arranger, and educator in NYC for over 60 years. The Prayer is performed by many cellists, but the Printemps, a Paraphrase is rarely performed. No cellist has recorded it. Dr. Duso Kitts performed these two pieces in June 2023 at the Glickman Popkin Bassoon Camp in front of an audience of bassoonists. The publisher, T.D. Ellis of Trevco Publishing Company attended the performance and agreed to make both arrangements available to bassoonists all over the world. The audience was enthusiastic about the piece and many have purchased the two works. All proceeds go directly to the Glickman Popkin Bassoon Camp scholarship for young bassoonists to attend this camp.

Griffin Planetarium Shows

Griffin Planetarium shows this Friday, September 1 and Saturday, September 2, at 7:00 pm: The one-hour shows this week include a tour of the current sky, a journey around planet Earth, and the full-dome movie “Experience the Aurora”. The planetarium is located in the Conway Corporation Center for the Sciences. Seating starts 10 minutes before show time. Admission is free. Seating is limited to the first 94. No admission after the shows begin. No food or drink allowed.
