Faculty are invited to apply for the 3rd Annual Teaching Excellence Institute, held June 20-23, 2023. This is an excellent opportunity to learn and engage with colleagues from various disciplines through expert-led presentations, discussion and activities. Throughout the week, the institute will focus on four primary themes:

• a deep dive into the characteristics of the UCA student body
• the science of learning and memory
• inclusive pedagogies
• executive functioning

If you are currently enrolled in UCA’s health insurance, you are eligible to participate in BeWell’s no cost, confidential on-site biometric health screenings. The screening takes less than 15 minutes and is one of two activities to complete in order to qualify for a discount on your health insurance premiums in 2024. On-site screenings will be offered May 8 through October 13, 2023. To schedule your screening at the UCA Student Health Clinic, call (501) 450-3136 or use the online patient portal. Why participate?
During the screening process, employees discover unknown health concerns such as high blood pressure, diabetes and some types of cancer. In addition to promoting the well-being of faculty and staff, screenings are the main strategy used to mitigate financial risk to UCA’s self-insured health plan. By participating in annual screenings, you are doing your part to help minimize increases to your health insurance premiums.

UCA is recruiting applicants for the 2023-2024 BearsServe Leaders program, an AmeriCorps program open to undergraduate students interested in a transformative service experience during their time at UCA. BearsServe Leaders serve 450 hours over the course of the academic year in school readiness, tutoring/mentoring, college readiness, food insecurity, and financial empowerment programs, and on-campus service opportunities will be available.

In addition to an exceptional professional experience, benefits include a living allowance of $2750 paid over the course of the service term, and an education award of $1824 available after completion of 450 hours, for a total award amount of $4574.

A complete description of the BearsServe Leaders program, service sites, benefits, eligibility, and application link are all available at uca.edu/americorps/bsl/. The priority deadline for applications is April 16th and applications will stay open until all positions are filled.

Griffin Planetarium shows this weekend Friday March 31 and Saturday April 1 at 7:00pm: The one-hour shows this week includes a tour of the current sky and the full-dome movie “Stars of the Pharaohs”. The planetarium is located in the Conway Corporation Center for the Sciences. Building doors open at 6:30pm. Seating starts 10 minutes before show time. Admission is free. Seating limited to the first 94. No admission after the shows begin. No food or drink allowed.

Dr. Celebi, Professor and Chair of Computer Science and Engineering, is among the best Computer Scientists in the world, according to the 2023 edition of Research.com ranking, which ranks researchers based on the d-index (discipline h-index). Dr. Celebi ranked 4359 in the world and 2197 in the US. Other Computer Scientists from Arkansas featured in the ranking were Dr. Xiaowei Xu of UALR (#9453 in the world, US: #4288 in the US) and Dr. Susan Gauch of UA (#9612 in the world, #4371 in the US).

The UCA Library invites you to attend our Human Library event at the Student Center Ballroom on Tuesday, April 4th, 2023 from 12 pm – 4 pm. The event is free and open to the public.

The Human Library is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. It is a place where real people are on loan to readers– a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated, and answered. The Human Library, a worldwide project that originated in Copenhagen in 2000, is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. People volunteering as “human books” will be available for individual, 20-minute conversations with participants interested in learning more about their stories.

UCA students, faculty, staff and community members have volunteered as to talk about their unique experiences to help readers “Unjudge Someone.” Please join us and feel free to bring a friend!

A Taste of UCA: Food Trends, Technology & Sustainability

Saturday, April 1st

UCA Downtown

Did someone say taste? Why yes! It was the Experimental Food Science class from the Dept. of Nutrition and Family Sciences at UCA. Following current food trends and evaluating new technologies, these students have been experimenting with various foods and cooking techniques to create new products in lieu of trying to solve sustainability issues. Now, they need YOU to complete their research. Before grabbing lunch with a friend, stop by UCA Downtown on Saturday, April 1st, during the Downtown Conway Open House to sample and offer your opinions on a variety of new foods. Other common treats will be shared along with a variety of nutrition information. Help these students conduct some important research while simultaneously pleasing your palette!
