The Discovery Research PreK-12 program (DRK-12) seeks to significantly enhance the learning and teaching of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science (STEM) by preK-12 students and teachers, through research and development of STEM education innovations and approaches. Projects in the DRK-12 program build on fundamental research in STEM education and prior research and development efforts that provide theoretical and empirical justification for proposed projects. Projects should result in research-informed and field-tested outcomes and products that inform teaching and learning. Teachers and students who participate in DRK-12 studies are expected to enhance their understanding and use of STEM content, practices and skills.

The DRK-12 program invites proposals that address immediate challenges that are facing preK-12 STEM education as well as those that anticipate radically different structures and functions of preK-12 teaching and learning. The DRK-12 program has three major research and development strands:
(1) Assessment;
(2) Learning; and
(3) Teaching. The program recognizes the synergy among the three strands and that there is some overlap and interdependence among them. However, proposals should identify a clear focus of the proposed research efforts (i.e., assessment, learning, or teaching) consistent with the proposal’s main objectives and research questions.
The program supports six types of projects:
(1) Exploratory,
(2) Design and Development,
(3) Impact,
(4) Implementation and Improvement,
(5) Syntheses, and
(6) Conferences.
All six types of projects apply to each of the three DRK-12 program strands.

All on-campus employers who plan to hire new student employees for summer or who need to hire new student workers to start work on or before the first day of class in the fall semester will need to participate in the On-Campus Student Employment Job Fair on April 19 in the Ronnie Williams Student Center Ballroom from 12 pm to 2 pm. Deadline to register is April 12. (Please coordinate with others in your department/office to register for only one table).

At the job fair, you will be provided a 5-foot table and two chairs. You may bring your own table covering/decorations, handouts, etc. Be prepared to share information about your current openings with students who visit your table. Check-in and set-up begins at 11:30 at the east entrance of the ballroom (near Room 204). Boxed lunches will be available at this time. You will need to be set up in the ballroom and ready for students at 12:00.

2023 Arkansas Country Music Awards

Little Rock, Arkansas. February 15, 2023 – Award-winning writer and creator of Tales from the South, Paula Marie Martin, has released her first album as a songwriter, Highway 300: Drive, which has landed in the top five finalists for Album of the Year with the 2023 Arkansas Country Music Awards. Highway 300: Drive is comprised of ten original songs, nine of which are written exclusively by Martin, and one that is co-written with veteran songwriter and musician Brad Williams. Vocalists Anna Brinker, Crystal Stribling, and Brad Williams add their talents to the album. It is available on all the major streaming platforms.

Martin, who earned her MFA in creative writing from the University of New Orleans, has two published novels and five books of poetry. Neither a musician nor a vocalist, she wrote her first song in August of 2021, then proceeded to write sixty-five songs in six weeks. Darian Stribling and Derek Wood of Blue Chair Recording Studios co-produced Highway 300: Drive with Martin.

Martin is an inductee in the Arkansas Writers’ Hall of Fame and the recipient of an Arkansas Governors’ Arts Award. Her internationally-syndicated radio show, Tales from the South, garnered multiple local and national awards. She lives in Little Rock and teaches writing for the University of Central Arkansas and Southern New Hampshire University.

The Arkansas Country Music Awards are annual industry awards that honor independent Arkansas country music recording artists. 2023 is the 6th Annual Awards. Voting, both to get into the finals and for the overall winners, is by an awards committee of industry professionals. Final voting also includes a collective tally of fan voting that counts as one committee person’s vote. The final round of online voting is in March.

Winners will be announced at the 6th Annual Arkansas Country Music Awards on June 05, 2023 at Reynolds Performance Hall in Conway.

Novelist and short-story writer John Brandon creates works that fit into the overlapping and burgeoning “Southern noir” and “rural noir” sub-genres of 21st century American letters. Brandon’s first novel, titled Arkansas (2008), combines readability and mystery while insisting on defamiliarizing its reader. Arkansas was adapted into a 2020 film by that title starring Vince Vaughn, Liam Hemsworth, Vivica A. Fox, John Malkovich, and Michael Kenneth Williams, among others. In addition to Arkansas, Brandon is also the author of Citrus County (2011), A Million Heavens (2012), and Further Joy (2014). His latest novel, Ivory Shores (2021) is a work of historical fiction, as well as an adaptation of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
