UCA in Belize 2023

Program Description

Dr. Cleveland and one or two CSD faculty will take a group of students to visit Belize. This program will provide students with a unique view of home- and community-based care, along with developing the students’ skills when working with diverse and underserved populations. We will conduct a three day “camp,” conducting static assessments and providing hands-on supervised intervention services. Additional experiences may include conducting dynamic assessments through the school system or a facility for geriatric patients in San Ignacio, Cayo District, Belize.

This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity and will allow undergraduate and graduate students to receive the observation and hands-on clinical hours needed to graduate. The program will be organized with the assistance of Therapy Abroad, a third party company designed to create opportunities for CSD students. In addition to the unique clinical opportunities, there will also be a change for students to experience the beauty and history of Belize through fun and educational tours and adventures. Objectives for this program will include: • Evaluation and treatment techniques that are culturally appropriate and sustainable • Identify, discuss, and treat individuals from culturally/linguistically diverse backgrounds. • Communicate effectively, recognizing the communication needs, and cultural/linguistic background of the client/patient, family, caregivers, and relevant others.

Location: Belize

 Health and Safety

Students registering for programs agree to the following: I understand that UCA does not control requirements of vendors, universities, and other stakeholders for study abroad programing. Should a vendor or organization require masks, vaccinations, quarantine, or other measures regarding COVID 19, I agree to follow these requirements. While UCA and its partners will work to update students, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to take measures to protect themselves from the spread of disease.

Students must attend one health and safety meeting in the spring semester. Meeting dates will be announced after the program deadlines.

Participants will be enrolled in comprehensive international insurance for the duration of programming. It is the student’s responsibility to extend insurance cover if they extend the UCA program dates abroad.
