Bimonthly Legislative Update

steve magee visitRepresentative Stephen Magie visited the UCA campus for a legislative update on Friday, March 15.

Before a crowd of about 20 faculty and staff, Magie reviewed some of the discussion from the Arkansas General Assembly including agriculture and health-related legislation.

Magie is a first time legislator representing District 72 that includes parts of Conway and Faulkner County. Magie cosponsored bill a “Congratulating the University of Central Arkansas Bears Football Team for an outstanding 2012 season and for continuing excellence in academics” and a another bill “Congratulating the University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears Volleyball team for an outstanding 2012 season.”

 

Featured Speaker in Honors College

honors presenterDr. Jialan Wang is the featured speaker at the Norb Schedler Honors College on Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. in the Farris Honors Hall Presentation Room.

Her topic is “Economics is the New Ethics: Morality in the Financial Age.”

Dr. Wang studied at the Honors College from 1998 to 2000. She earned a B.S. in mathematics from Caltech and received a doctorate in financial economics from MIT. She was Assistant Professor of Finance at the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St Louis before moving to her current position as an economist at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. She is a board member of Pediatric HIV/AIDS Treatment Support, a nonprofit that provides medical support for HIV-positive children in rural China.

 

Arkansas Student Success Symposium This Week

The 6th Annual Arkansas Student Success Symposium that will be held on the UCA campus on March 27, 2013, in the UCA Student Center.

This statewide gathering of Arkansas educators and nationally-recognized leaders in higher education provides an opportunity to explore and review best practices for improving student success at both the community college and university levels. This yearly event is a great opportunity for professional development and a chance to meet others from around the State — right on our own campus.

The 2013 Symposium presenters feature the best in student success speakers, researchers, and practitioners. Registration, speakers, and their biographies can be found at The topics for each speaker and their biographies can be found at http://www.arkansasstudentsuccess.org/.

Breakfast with General Assembly

photo8Approximately 20 legislators from the Arkansas General Assembly visited with UCA staff and students at the Legislative Breakfast on Thursday, March 14.

The casual breakfast meeting allowed legislators to visit with staff and students, ask questions, and simply relax before moving into their respective legislative meetings. President Tom Courtway, Staff Senate President Stephanie McBrayer, and UCA Student Government Association President Spencer Sims greeted legislators.

Other UCA staff present were Vice President of Finance and Administration Diane Newton, Provost and Vice President for Academics Steve Rune, Executive Assistant to the President Gilbert Baker, Vice President for University and Government Relations Jeff Pitchford, Vice President for Advancement Shelley Mehl, Norb Schedler Honors College Director of Student Engagement Patricia Smith, Associate Director for Media Relations Fredricka Sharkey and Associate for Administration Connie Mae.

The UCA Student Government Association was also represented students Adam Price, Blake Brizzolara, Michael Murphy, Allison Rubio, and Justin Merkel.

Minority Freshmen Honored for Achievement

One hundred freshmen students were honored during the Minority Freshman Academic Achiever Reception on Thursday, March 14 by the Office of Multicultural Student Services. Twenty-two students attended the event to receive certificates and trophies to acknowledge their success.

Students honored earned a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average on at least 12 graduation hours during the fall 2012 semester.

UCA President Tom Courtway, several department chairs, and even parents from El Dorado, Ark., attended the event. Keynote speakers for the event were sophomores Kenya Ray, Juan Reyes Vasquez and Richard “Deante” Gaskins, who were honored at the 2012 reception.

“This is the 5th year of the program which has the purpose of celebrating the first semester accomplishments of our incoming freshmen in hopes that they will continue their efforts to do well academically at UCA and be retained until graduation,” commented Angela Jackson, director of the Office of Multicultural Student Services.

Economics Students Make Presentation

Two College of Business economics students presented research that they have co-authored with UCA faculty at the 50th annual meeting of the Public Choice Society in New Orleans, Louisiana, March 7-10, 2013.

Britney Logan presented her paper “Does Interest Group Sclerosis Occur via New Business Venturing” (co-authored with Dr. Noel Campbell). Sttwo COB studentsephen Gross presented “Public Corruption in a Standard Model of Business Venturing” (co-authored with Dr. Noel Campbell).

Both papers were well received by the conference attendees. Both students travel and conference fees were paid for through a grant Dr. David Mitchell received to support undergraduate economics research at UCA from the Koch Charitable Trust Foundation.

Economics Professor Named to Public Choice Society Board

Noel Campbell, professor of economics at UCA, was appointed to the Executive Committee’s Board of Directors (2012-2015) of the Public Choice Society during the Society’s 50th anniversary conference. The Public Choice Society was created by the late Nobel Laureate economist, James Buchanan, on the basis of “methodological individualism, rational choice, and politics-as-exchange.” The Public Choice Society is affiliated with the Springer journals Public Choice, Constitutional Political Economy, and the Review of Austrian Economics.

Art Instructor Participates in Exhibition

Self Portrait 9David Bailin, instructor of art, Department of Art, participated in curated drawing exhibition entitled “Bleak Beauty: artists who find beauty in the unpromising” at the Prographica Gallery, Seattle, Wa., in March.

Bailin also juried the 2013 Batesville Area Arts Council National Juried Exhibition at the Main Street Art Gallery in Batesville. The exhibition runs from March 28 to April 20, 2013. He presents the awards during the opening of the exhibition.
