How are the tutors trained?
The Writing Center consultants go through a rigorous application and training process:
1. UCA professors recommend potential tutors to the Director or Assistant Director of the Writing Center via email. Potential tutors maintain a 3.5 or higher grade point average, display excellent writing skills, and possess outgoing personalities capable of reaching out to a diverse student body.
2. Those students recommended put together a portfolio of their best writing and bring it to an interview with the Director and Assistant Director of the Writing Center.
3. Potential tutors are chosen from those interviews and portfolio reviews to register for Writing 3315, Teaching and Tutoring Writing, the required course for students who want to be tutors. During their time in the course, students apprentice in the Writing Center with more experienced tutors, learn theoretical and practical approaches to teaching writing one-to-one, and acquire knowledge of the kinds of writing done across the disciplines.
4. New writing center tutors are chosen from the group that passed Writing 3315.
