[1] Purposes
The primary objective of the undergraduate political science program, located in the Department of Government, Public Service, and International Studies, is to provide students with the conceptual and analytical tools for understanding political institutions and processes. The political science curriculum is designed to satisfy the needs of (1) those students desiring to major or minor in political science and (2) those students majoring in other fields of study who elect to include courses in political science as a part of their general education requirements. In addition, the department administers an undergraduate degree program in public administration (with the goal of preparing students for careers in local, state, and/or federal government) and in international studies (with the goal of preparing students for careers in international relations and comparative politics).
Courses offered deal with the place of politics in society and contribute to an understanding and appreciation of the purposes, organization, and operation of domestic and international political systems.

The degree of Bachelor of Arts (BA), with a major in political science, requires successful completion of 120 hours, including (1) 38 hours to meet lower-division UCA Core requirements and completing of the upper-division UCA Core requirements using major, minor, or elective courses (see the UCA Core requirements); (2) the major requirements, including core and elective requirements; (3) the related course requirement consisting of a three credit-hour foreign language course at the 2000-level or higher; and (4) a minor or second major chosen by the student.
Mathematics Pathway: First-time, first-year students majoring in Political Science enter the Quantitative Literacy Mathematics Pathway and must enroll in MATH 1360 during their first year of study, unless they have already been awarded credit that completes their 1000-level math requirement.
[3.1.1] Major in Political Science (36 hours)
All students majoring in political science and seeking the BA degree will complete 15 credit hours of 2000-level PSCI core courses and 21 credit hours of PSCI elective courses in six political science subfields.
Note: PSCI 1330 U.S. Government and Politics [ACTS: PLSC2003] is a prerequisite for all 3000-and 4000-level courses. PSCI 1300 Introduction to Political Science, PSCI 1330 U.S. Government and Politics, and PSCI 2300 Introduction to International Relations may be used to satisfy lower-division UCA Core requirements in Critical Inquiry. [3.1.2] Related Course Requirement
Students pursuing a BA in Political Science will complete a three-credit-hour foreign language course at the 2000-level or above as well as all course prerequisites. Students with prior experience in a language are strongly encouraged to take a placement exam before enrolling in their first course. See Placement and Credit by Examination in the School of Language and Literature section of this bulletin. Note: CSD 2303 Basic Sign Language, CSD 4303 Intermediate Sign Language, and transferred Guided/Extended Study (i.e., correspondence) courses will not be accepted in fulfillment of the foreign language requirement.

[3.2] Bachelor of Science in Political Science
The degree of Bachelor of Science (BS), with a major in political science, requires successful completion of 120 credit hours, including (1) the UCA Core: complete 38 hours to meet lower-division UCA Core requirements and complete upper-division UCA Core requirements using major, minor, or elective courses (see the UCA Core requirements); (2) major requirements listed below; and (3) a minor field of study and/or electives chosen in consultation with a PSCI faculty advisor to meet the student’s career interests and the 120-credit hour requirement.

[3.3.1] Purposes
The degree of Bachelor of Public Administration (BPA), located in the Department of Government, Public Service, and International Studies, prepares students for careers in government agencies (federal , state, and local) and non-profit organizations. The program includes a 36-credit hour major offering courses in state government and politics, local government and politics, intergovernmental relations, public management, public policy, program evaluation, government budgeting, and a variety of substantive policy topics ( education policy, environmental policy, and community and economic development policy). The program also requires a six-credit hour internship in a government or non-profit organization and a one-credit hour course introducing students to the profession of public service.

[3.4.1] Purpose
The International Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program located in the Department of Government, Public Service, and International Studies at the University of Central Arkansas that is intended for students who are interested in studying global topics and problems primarily from a social science perspective. Students are exposed to a variety of courses in the fields of international relations and comparative politics within the discipline of political science, as well as a variety of courses within the disciplines of economics, finance, geography, history, philosophy, and world languages. Students may choose to pursue either a major or a minor in International Studies.
[3.4.2] Major in International Studies (33 hours)
The degree of Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), with a major in International Studies, requires successful completion of 120 hours, including (1) completion of 38 hours to meet lower-division UCA Core requirements and completion of the upper-division UCA Core requirements using major, minor, or elective courses (see the UCA Core requirements); (2) completion of the major (core, experiential learning, and concentration) requirements listed below; (3) completion of related course requirements consisting of six credit-hours in a foreign language at the 2000-level or higher; and (4) completion of a minor or second major.
All student majoring in International Studies are required to complete twelve (12) hours of core coursework; three (3) hours of experiential learning coursework (travel/study abroad program, independent research project, internship, or participation in a collegiate Model United Nations conference); and eighteen (18) hours of coursework at the 3000-level or above from one of the three International Studies concentrations, including at least six hours of PSCI courses. A student whose second major is International Studies must complete at least 24 credit hours of required and elective courses that are not also counted toward the first major. The nine credit hours of courses that may overlap between the two majors may include both lower-division required courses and upper-division elective courses.
