UCA Theatre in London – Study Abroad – The Globe Theatre

It’s important to be involved!

UCA Theatre Program offers many opportunities for students to not only be active in the program, but to gain real world experience as leaders in a theatrical production.

Here are the requirements and applications to do that!

Design

Designing productions gives students the opportunity to work with the production director and technical director to create an artistic vision. Students are allowed to design in the following areas: scenic, costume, lighting, sound, properties, and makeup. Design Application Applications are due the first Thursday in April for the following academic year. Interviews TBA.

Student requirements:

  • GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Completion of THEA 2325 (Fundamentals of Design) to design for the Student Directed Production
  • Completion of THEA 2325 (Fundamentals of Design) and allied design course for a Mainstage Production
  • All Scenic Designers must have also taken THEA 2331 (Stagecraft)
  • 8-15 hours a week work in allied shop, while show is in production

Applicants should bring to the interview a current resume and portfolio, and be prepared to discuss their expressed interested in designing.

  2. Designers must have required materials at published deadlines (see UCA Theatre Design Process).
  3. Designers must stay within the assigned budget.
  4. Designers must schedule, and meet weekly with the Faculty Design Mentor.
  5. Designers must attend all design and production meetings, which are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays at 4 p.m. (Do not schedule classes or labs at these times)
  6. Designers must attend all technical rehearsals and opening night.
  7. If designing for the Student Directed Production, the designer must follow the Student Production Technical Guidelines.


Stage Management

Stage managers play a vital role as the liaison between the director, cast, crew, house manager, faculty, and staff for each production. These students are tasked with the responsibility of communication, organization, and time management. Stage Management Application Applications are due the first Thursday in April for the following academic year. Interviews TBA.

GPA of 2.0 or higher

Applicants should bring to the interview a current resume and portfolio and be prepared to discuss their expressed interested in stage managing.

Please be aware of the following design guidelines:

  1. Stage Managers should plan to meet daily with the director during the rehearsal process.
  2. Stage Managers must attend all design and production meetings, which are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays at 4 p.m. (N.B.: Do not schedule classes at these times).
  3. Stage Managers must attend all rehearsals and performances.

Student Directed Production

The purpose of the Student Directed Production is to give students the opportunity to produce their own show from an existing script. The intended scope of this production is considerably smaller than that of a mainstage show. The primary focus is on directing the actors and serving the text. Spectacle should be approached as secondary. Student Production Directing Application & Regulations Applications are due the second Thursday in February for the following academic year. Interviews TBA.

The purpose of this project is to give students the opportunity to produce a show from an existing script. The intended scope of this production is considerably smaller than that of a mainstage show. The primary focus is on directing the actors and serving the text. Spectacle should be approached as secondary. This production will
  • be included in the regular UCA Theatre season promotional materials
  • consist of four evening performances (Tuesday-Friday) and one Saturday matinee
  • have an overall production budget of approximately $1000
  • be presented in the Black Box Theatre (SFA Rm. 210)
  • be supported by the UCA Theatre production shops
Student requirements
  • GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Successful completion of THEA 4320- Directing
Production requirements (scenic, costume, lighting, props) and any special requirements. (IE, ‘the show requires a 10 foot steel trap that appears to impale a cast member’ or for a more realistic example, ‘the play requires a talking plant that devours people and grows larger’). Please conclude your description with an explanation of why you wish to do this project.

Workshop Production

The purpose of the Workshop Productions is to provide a UCA Theatre major/ minor or faculty/ staff member an environment to present an original work or re-imagining of a work in the public domain. The primary focus should be on directing the actors and serving the text. Spectacle should be approached as secondary. Workshop Production Directing Application Applications are due the first Thursday in March for the following academic year. Interviews TBA.

GPA of 2.0 or higher
The purpose of the Workshop Productions is to provide a UCA Theatre major/ minor or faculty/ staff member an environment to present an original work or re-imagining of a work in the public domain. The primary focus should be on directing the actors and serving the text. Spectacle should be approached as secondary.
This production:
  • will not necessarily be included in the regular UCA Theatre season promotional materials, however UCA Theatre will produce flyers and programs
  • will consist of at least one performance
    • dates, times, and the venue will be negotiated on a per show basis
    • this will not be a ticketed production
  • has no production budget o all design elements need to be either found items or from UCA Theatre’s current stock, as approved by the Technical Director.
  • is not supported by the UCA Theatre production shops.
  • will not be eligible for P and P credit
    • all cast and crew will need to be arranged by the director
