Read for Success

UCA Summer Start –  Read for Success will help you start ahead of the game, by providing you with opportunities to:

  • Complete your developmental reading requirement before the fall semester
  • Prepare to handle college-level reading and writing assignments in your classes
  • Complete one of your UCA Core requirements
  • Learn about the resources UCA offers to help you succeed
  • Meet other students, faculty and staff before Welcome Week even begins
  • Experience campus life and even move into your residence hall early
  • Have fun!

OSS group 2Students who begin their college career underprepared in reading and literacy skills can be severely challenged in their first year. The UCA Summer Start – Read for Success program will help you learn the reading, writing and study skills you need to succeed in all of your classes, before the fall semester even starts.  You’ll work hard, but you’ll have fun. When classes begin, you’ll be ready!

Eligibility requirements – To participate, students must:
  • Be an entering first-year UCA student admitted for Summer or Fall 2017
  • Have an ACT Reading subscore of 15-18 or equivalent
Program requirements – In order to participate, students must:
  • Apply no later than July 10, 2017
  • Enroll in UNIV 0361 (Fundamentals of College Literacy) and the designated UCA Core Course
  • Commit to attending all scheduled class sessions, success workshops, and evening tutoring hours
  • Complete all assignments as assigned by the instructors

Estimated program costs:

Students who submit a 2016-2017 FAFSA can also apply for a UCA institutional scholarship of up to $1,000 toward the cost of the program.  Please review your eligibility for “summer aid” with the UCA Office of Financial Aid by contacting them at 501-450-3140 or www.uca.edu/financialaid/.   (Note: the 2016-2017 FAFSA must be submitted by June 30, 2017 in order to be considered for federal financial aid and to be eligible for UCA scholarship assistance.)

Residential Costs:  $ 2,515 (approximate total cost)

  • 6 hours tuition & fees ($1,650)
    • Eligible students can apply the $1,000 UCA Scholarship against the cost of tuition & fees!  This scholarship is not available in the fall and spring semesters, so take advantage of this now!
  • Campus housing ($315)
  • Meals Plan ($400)
  • Books ($150)
  • August Intersession (Aug 14-18): residential participants may also choose to move into their Fall 2017 assigned campus housing and remain on campus the week following the program for an additional $105 housing fee and a meal plan charge

Non-residential Costs: $ 1,900 (approximate total cost)

  • 7 hours tuition & fees ($1,650)

  • Lunch only (M-F): ($100) or Lunch and Dinner only (M-F): ($200)
