MIDDLE SCHOOL (5-8)

Grasping Phenomenal Science (GPS) for Middle School: Navigating from Standards to Instruction

Come experience the vision for middle school science! During this three-day opportunity, educators will explore science phenomena, reflect on instructional strategies, and make connections to the new Arkansas K-12 Science Standards. Student-focused learning through the application of science, math, ad literacy skills will be highlighted. An introduction to the optional Accelerated Science Course Pathway will be included. Two follow-up days will be offered in Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 along with opportunities for classroom-level support. NOTE: Participation in all three days of this session meets the ADE requirement for the Pre-Advancement Placement Science (Pre-AP) teacher certification or re-certification. This session DOES NOT fulfill the ADE licensure requirements to teach high school Physical Science – Integrated for high school credit at the 8th grade level.

HIGH SCHOOL (9-12)

Grasping Phenomenal Sciene (GPS) for Grades 9-12 (Biology): Navigating from Standards to Instruction

Come experience a new vision for the high school science experience! During this two-day opportunity, educators will engage in phenomenon-based investigations aligned to the new Biology – Integrated course. Student-focused learning through the application of science, math, and literacy skills will be highlighted. Two follow-up PD days will be offered in Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 along with opportunities for classroom-level support. Connections to TESS: 1a, 1d, 1e, 3a-e, 4a, 4e.

Leopold Education Project
LEP Arkansas Educator Workshop

The Leopold Education Project (LEP) is an interdisciplinary, critical thinking, conservation and environmental education curriculum based on the classic “A Sand County Almanac” by Aldo Leopold. LEP teaches about humanity’s ties to the natural environment in an effort to conserve and protect earth’s natural resources. It is the educational outreach program for The Aldo Leopold Foundation.

This workshop is designed to help classroom science teachers and non-formal science educators meet the new Arkansas Science Standards for middle and high school students. The workshop and curricula focuses on water resource conservation. Hands-on training using:

Creating a STEAM Culture in Your School Using littleBits!

Receive 3 hours of PD while learning how to develop a growth mindset and prepare to engage students in 21st century learning using Little Bits. Little Bits is a platform of easy-to-use electronic building blocks empowering everyone to create inventions, large and small. No experience or equipment necessary! The UCA STEM Institute is home to a littleBits Pro Library that you can check out for FREE!

The morning session will focus on grades 3-5, and the afternoon session will focus on grades 6-8. While the afternoon session is focused on grades 6-8, the content can be easily modified for grades 9-12. Only 20 spots per grade band.
