Workshop: Fostering Geometric Thinking

Date: June 17-20,

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Where: UCA STEM Institute Main 214

Registration: $150

Workshop Description:

What is geometric thinking? Is all mathematical thinking also geometric thinking? How can teachers encourage the development of geometric thinking in their students? This course for teachers of mathematics will address these and other questions.

The course content is based closely on the work of Mark Driscoll contained in his book Fostering Geometric Thinking (Heinemann Publishers). Drawing on his experiences with three professional development programs, author Mark Driscoll outlines key "habits of thinking" that characterize the successful learning and use of geometry. He offers strategies that teachers can use to cultivate these habits of thinking as well as guidelines for assessing students' development. Participants in this course must have access to the book throughout the course.

Lunch will be provided for participants. Participants will receive a copy of the book Fostering Geometric Thinking.
