Data Modeling: Inventing Displays, Center and Precision Grades 6-7
This course will develop statistical concepts for middle grades. It will explore representational competencies by examining what characteristics of data different displays make evident or even hide. Participants will then use data to determine a “best guess” of a real measurement using data, which leads to the development and understanding of measures of center by engaging an important mathematical practice—inventing an algorithm. Participants will then invent and explore methods for measuring the precision—the consistency—of a collection of measurements.
Dr. Richard Lehrer of Vanderbilt University developed the materials that will be used in the training. They are well researched and align with the Common Core standards for Statistics and Probability in grades 6-7. The curriculum materials are free for use in Arkansas classrooms.
Full implementation of the materials requires the students (or at the very least the teacher) to utilize TinkerPlots 2 software on occasions. (Cost for single-user license is $50. Equipping a lab can be done for as little as $10 per computer. To purchase Tinkerplots: Contact Key Curriculum Press for more information.) By including this component, the training will include 3 hours of technology credit. Tinker Plots will not be needed until the september meeting dates. Please do not send the purchase priced with your registration.
This will be a total of 6 days-2 days during the summer and 2 follow-up days during the fall of 2012 and 2 class embedded days during the 2012-2013 school year. All communications (workshop details, invoicing and receipts) will be sent electronically to the email you provide below. Please double check the email that you supply us.
