2012 History Symposium: Presidential Elections in History
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Allan J. Lichtman
Dr. Lichtman is Distinguished Professor of History and formerly chair of the Department of History at American University in Washington, D.C. He is the author of seven books. He has provided commentary for all major U.S. television and radio networks and many foreign broadcast companies including BBC. He has published op-ed articles in major newspapers such as the New York Times and Washington Post.
His latest book The Keys to the White House explains 13 historical patterns in presidential elections that Dr. Lichtman has used to correctly predict the popular vote outcome in every presidential election from 1984 to 2008. His keynote address will explain the model and apply it to the 2012 election. For his lunch address Dr. Lichtman will speak about the 1928 election when the chief issues were liquor, religion, and geography. The 1928 election pitted Herbert Hoover of Iowa against the governor of New York, Al Smith, whose running mate was Senator Joe T. Robinson of Arkansas. Dr. Lichtman has written a book about the 1928 election entitled Prejudice and the Old Politics.
Other presentations in the symposium will include:

Data Modeling: Inventing Displays, Center, and Precision (Grades 6-7)
June 5-6, 2012, September 14-15, 2012, February 22-23, 2013
UCA STEM Institute; Old Main Room 214, Conway, AR
8:30-3:30
This course will develop statistical concepts for middle grades. It will explore representational competencies by examining what characteristics of data different displays make evident or even hide. Participants will then use data to determine a “best guess” of a real measurement using data, which leads to the development and understanding of measures of center by engaging an important mathematical practice—inventing an algorithm. Participants will then invent and explore methods for measuring the precision—the consistency—of a collection of measurements.
Dr. Richard Lehrer of Vanderbilt University developed the materials that will be used in the training. They are well researched and align with the Common Core standards for Statistics and Probability in grades 6-7. The curriculum materials are free for use in Arkansas classrooms. Full implementation of the materials requires the students (or at the very least the teacher) to utilize TinkerPlots 2 software on occasions. (Cost for single-user license is $50. Equipping a lab can be done for as little as $10 per computer. Contact Key Curriculum Press for more information.) By including this component, the training will include 3 hours of technology credit.
