UCA to Host Insurance Education Institute for Teachers

The University of Central Arkansas has announced the 2007 Insurance Education Institute. The institute is designed for junior high and high school teachers who teach a course leading to a high school diploma. Funding is provided by the Insurance Education Institute and covers the costs of registration, graduate credit, on-campus room and board and classroom materials for individuals selected to attend the institute. UCA will award three hours of graduate credit and/or 30 hours of professional development credit at no cost to participants upon successful completion of the institute.

The institute involves both distance learning and on-campus instruction. The distance learning component will be offered March 1-June 9. The on-campus portion will be held at UCA June 10-15 at the Brewer-Hegeman Conference Center.

The Insurance Education Institute is a non-profit charitable organization located in Indianapolis, Ind., whose goal is to improve the understanding of insurance and its role in society through the education of teachers and students.

The Institute is designed to encourage educators to include insurance instruction in their school curriculum. Participants will create lesson plans, gain knowledge of risk and insurance, improve their reading and interpretation of insurance policies and have a better understanding of career opportunities in insurance.

Topics covered include: risk management; property and liability insurance; insurance regulations and legal environment; automobile, renters, and homeowners insurance; reinsurance; health insurance and disability income; family financial planning; current issues in insurance, i.e., terrorism, mold; and technology. Special features of the institute include guest speakers from the insurance industry and government agencies and workbooks containing topic outlines and study materials.
