CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas Department of Music will host its Tuba/Euphonium Spring Fling concert Wednesday, April 5, featuring Dr. Gretchen Renshaw of the Hendrix College music faculty.

The 7:30 p.m. concert in the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall is free and open to the public.

Renshaw, who conducts the Hendrix Wind Ensemble and is instructor of low brass, met UCA’s Dr. Gail Robertson, assistant professor of tuba and euphonium, when both were doctoral students at Michigan State University.

“What an amazing coincidence it was that we both ended up in the same town of Conway,” Robertson said.

Each semester, Robertson hosts guest artists. Renshaw was an obvious choice. Also performing will be Hendrix music faculty Dr. John Krebs (piano) and Dr. Steven James (trumpet), Robertson (euphonium), the UCA Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble and the UCA Euphonium Duodecet.

“Having such a large studio of euphoniums is a rare and special honor,” Robertson said. “I am delighted to have UCA’s students join Dr. Renshaw for her recital.”

Works featured will include Sergei Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet” Suite No. 1, Op. 64 arranged by Charlie Vernon; “Devil’s Waltz” by Steven Verhelst; a surprise duet for Renshaw and Robertson; “Short Meditation” by Anthony Plog; and Renshaw’s arrangement of ”Souvenir de Porto Rico” by Louis Moreau Gottschalk.
