UCA Board Buys Out President’s Contract

The University of Central Arkansas Board of Trustees voted unanimously during a special called meeting on Sept. 2 to buy out the contract of UCA President Allen Meadors.

The board appointed General Counsel Tom Courtway as interim president. He will take over the post effective immediately.

The board will pay Meadors his current salary through June 30, 2012. He will receive $337,000 with private money for 18 more months. Meadors will stay on university insurance through June 30, 2012. His car allowance will end Oct. 1.  He will also receive sick days and annual leave that have been accrued.

Meadors became UCA’s ninth president in July 2009.

Tom Courtway has served as general counsel of UCA since August 2006. He received a B.A. in economics and business from Hendrix College in 1974, a J.D. with honors from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1978, and a M.L.T. from Georgetown University in 1983.

UCA hired Courtway as its general counsel in 2002, but he left in late 2003 to serve as interim director of the Arkansas Department of Education until May 2004, when he returned to his position at UCA. In December 2005, Courtway became vice president of Hendrix College, where he remained until August 2006, when he again came back to UCA as vice president and general counsel.
