Successful start for UCA Debate Team

The University of Central Arkansas Debate and Forensics Team had a positive start to their season when they competed in two tournaments this semester.

The team attended the Weevil Wars Tournament at the University of Arkansas at Monticello on Oct. 2-4 and took third place in the Team IPDA.

In addition, the team of Braxton Johnson and Jacob Thomas had a 3-1 preliminary round record and reached the quarterfinals. The team of Brynn Woods and Dalton Cook had a 3-1 preliminary round record and reached the semifinals.

Novice debater Catherine Walker reached the octafinals in her very first tournament ever, while Junior Varsity debater Dalton Cook reached the octafinals in his very first tournament as a college student. Varsity debater Brynn Woods also reached the octafinals.

Junior Varsity debater Mark Matlock reached the finals and was the tournament runner-up in his division. He was also the fourth best speaker in his division.

Last weekend, the team attended the Union University Bulldog Challenge in Jackson, Tennessee.

Three debaters reached the elimination rounds:

  • Varsity debater Danielle Casey reached the quarterfinals.
  • Junior Varsity debater Dalton Cook reached the semifinals.
  • Junior Varsity debater Brady Shiers won the tournament in his division.

The team’s next tournament is the Red River Classic at LSU-Shreveport on Nov. 6-8.

The team is always looking for new debaters to join. Meetings are currently held on Monday nights in Thompson Hall room 114.
