Music Department to host horn event

The University of Central Arkansas Department of Music and The Horn Studio (French Horn) will host a visit by one of the nation’s foremost professional horn players and teachers, Mr. Eli Epstein, as the featured guest artist for the UCA Horn Event 2005.

Epstein will present a solo recital at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, with UCA piano faculty member Terrie Shires accompanying. He will then give a public master class from 2 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14. The master class will focus on orchestral horn playing. The above events will take place in the Snow Fine Arts Recital Hall.

Other events during the UCA Horn Event 2005 will include an Arkansas High School Honors Horn Choir on Sunday, Feb. 13, made up of high school horn players who are nominated by their band directors and/or private lesson teachers. UCA Horn Professor Brent Shires will rehearse and direct the ensemble, while Epstein will give a clinic for those participating. The Horn Choir’s performance will take place during the intermission of Epstein’s recital on Sunday evening.

Also, Shires will perform a special solo work with the UCA Wind Ensemble at 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, 15 Feb at Reynolds Performance Hall. On its first spring program, the Wind Ensemble’s concert program will include “Rhapsody for Horn, Winds and Percussion” by Jan Van der Roost. The work is an exciting musical tale which requires the hornist to utilize his full range, and many techniques as well.

All of the UCA Horn Event 2005 performances are free and open to the public. For more information about the UCA Horn Event 2005, contact Brent Shires at (501) 450-5768.
