Jazz Ensembles to be in concert Nov. 22

 CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas Department of Music will host its final jazz ensemble concert of the fall semester on Sunday, Nov. 22, in the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

The 4:30 p.m. performance, free and open to the public, will feature Jazz Ensemble I and II and the UCA Dixieland Band.

Larry Jones directs Jazz Ensemble I. Dr. Gail Robertson directs Jazz Ensemble II. Dr. Jackie Lamar directs the UCA Dixieland Band.

The UCA Dixieland Band will perform some standard tunes such as “Ain’t She Sweet,” “Bill Bailey,” “Hello Dolly,” and “St. James Infirmary.” In addition, the group will feature pianist Anna Laua McAfee on “Little Rock Getaway” by Jo Sullivan.

The program for Jazz Ensemble II includes “Gospel John” (featuring Taylor Brandon), “Killer Joe,” “The Summer of ’42,” (featuring Carlos Udave), “September Song,” “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You,” “Funkythustra,” and “Oblivion,” (featuring Brandon Lugo, flugelhorn).

The program for Jazz Ensemble I includes “Con Alma” by Dizzy Gillespie, “A Lift of the Foot” by Alan Baylock,” Cotton Tail” by Duke Ellington, and “March of the Tadpoles” by Toshiko Akiyoshi.

“Cool jazz is in the air… grab your jacket and mittens and join us,” said Robertson, visiting assistant professor of Tuba and Euphonium/Jazz.
