CONWAY — The Harrington String Quartet will visit the University of Central Arkansas this week as artists in residence.

Residency activities will be highlighted by a public concert Thursday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

All residency events are free and open to the public.

“The central target audience of this event is members of the music department due to the one-on-one work they will have with these visiting artists,” said Dr. Stephen Feldman, faculty sponsor of the residency. “However, it is a great opportunity for all students and community members to hear a world-class performance.”

The Harrington String Quartet (currently violinist Rossitza Jekova-Goza, violist Vesselin Todorov and cellist Emmanuel Lopez) is in residence as string faculty at West Texas A&M. For the UCA residency, pianist Lee Phillips, a faculty member at Indiana University, will join the group.

According to www.harringtonstringquartet.org, for more than 30 years, the quartet has delighted audiences with their finely blended sound and heartfelt interpretations of a wide spectrum of repertoire, ranging from Bach and Purcell to Bartok and Crumb. Harrington String Quartet’s collaborative recordings with the Phoenix Chorale, Northern Lights, was distinguished as iTunes’ Best Classical Vocal Album of 2012. The quartet regularly provides concerts, masterclasses, lecture-recitals and presentations for audiences of all ages as well as collaborative projects with artists from various fields.

Other residency activities include:

  • Chamber music coaching, Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, Feb. 1, 2:30-5 p.m.
  • Individual masterclasses, Snow Fine Arts Center, Feb. 1, 7-9 p.m.
  • Performance and conversation, Conway Junior High, Feb. 2, 12:30-1:15 p.m.
  • Lecture/recital for UCA students, Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, Feb. 2, 1:40-2:30 p.m.

“Events like this are important because the creativity of the composers and artistry of the performers are enriching and inspiring,” Feldman said. “Any and all students would have a very memorable experience in hearing this concert.”
