Green receives grant to take teachers abroad

Dr. Brooks Green, Department of Geography, recently received a $64,000 grant from the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program to take teachers to Russia this summer where they will travel from Moscow to Vladivostok via the Trans-Siberian Railroad stopping in Ekaterinburg, Novosibirsk and Irkutsk.

This grant will fund a short-term seminar and enable 11 teachers and two university professors to travel and live in areas of Russia that are generally inaccessible to American teachers. Thus, this advanced seminar will enhance and broaden their understanding of Russian culture as they observe, study, live in, and travel east of the Ural Mountains to Vladivostok.

Participants will be taught the history and geography of these areas by Russian professors, visit significant sites, visit with Russian school teachers and participate in Russian language lessons. The seminar will enable the participants to collect and organize curricular material to create lesson plans and teaching units, both traditional and electronic. After finalization of their work, teachers will present at the Arkansas Conference on Teaching. Ultimately, the materials prepared during the seminar will be integrated into the teachers? course curriculums.
