Community School of Music fall registration underway

The UCA Community School of Music (CSM) is registering students for the fall semester, according to Smokey Emerson, director. Now in its 26th year of offering exceptional musical training and instruction to children and adults in the Central Arkansas area, the faculty of the Community School consists primarily of UCA Music faculty and selected graduate and undergraduate students, along with adjunct instructors who are professional musicians and teachers.

Registration information is available at uca.edu/csm/registration, or you may call 501-450-3672 or email Teresa Bumgarner, tbumgarn@uca.edu. Regular office hours are 8am – 4:30pm at the CSM office in the UCA Snow Fine Arts Center, Room 203. We will be open until 7 pm for walk-in registration August 24-27.

Private instruction is offered in piano, voice, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, Suzuki violin and all band and orchestral instruments. Tuition for private lessons varies depending upon the level of the instructor and costs are listed on the CSM website at uca.edu/csm.

Suzuki violin instruction, for children as young as 4, will be available on Mondays this fall. Violinist Katherine Williamson, with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and Rockefeller Quartet, teaches the Suzuki method for very young learners and offers traditional instruction in violin and viola. Lessons will be available during the day and evening.

Beginning Guitar Class for students age 14 and up will begin Thursday, Feb. 17, at 6:30pm. Ten one-hour classes provide students with little or no experience on the guitar, a chance to learn to play and also read music. Students will learn scales, chords and a variety of popular tunes. Students should bring their own acoustic guitar for the class. Instructor Nate Mathews earned a BA in music from UCA, with emphasis in guitar, and has been teaching students in Conway for about 9 years.

Teens and adults who want to learn to read music are encouraged to join the Music Reading 101 class. UCA faculty member, Mariana Aun, will lead students in developing an understanding of musical notation and a greater appreciation of music. Four weekly classes will be taught.

The Little Mozart Class meets weekly for 6 weeks, with class time at 5-5:30pm beginning Tuesday, Sept. 22. Terrie Shires, Class Piano Instructor at UCA, will be teaching this class for children in grades K-2. This is a fun introduction to the keyboard and an excellent program to determine readiness for piano lessons. The group method encourages practice and provides performance experience during the class. Maximum class size is six, with a minimum enrollment of four to make a class.

Private and Group lessons are taught in the Alexander Technique by Cliff Hicks, a member of the American Society for the Alexander Technique and a certified instructor for over 20 years.    Our Group Lessons are offered at an extreme bargain to introduce people to the technique.   Classes will meet on Sundays at 2pm for four weeks from 2-3pm in Snow Fine Arts 316. Teachers, athletes, office workers, performing artists, and people from every walk of life have used the technique for prevention and recovery from injury and repetitive motion strain, end tension headaches, and to promote endurance. Additional information is on our website, uca.edu/csm, and at http://www.alexandertech-centralar.com/.
