Clarinetist David Shifrin to visit Jan. 19

David Shifrin high res copyDavid Shifrin, a clarinetist who has appeared with the Philadelphia and Minnesota Orchestras, will be at the University of Central Arkansas as Artist in Residence on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

His recital, free and open to the public, is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

Shifrin has also appeared with American symphonies in Dallas, Seattle, Houston, Milwaukee, Detroit and Phoenix, among many others, and has performed internationally with orchestras in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. He has also served as principal clarinetist with the Cleveland Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra, the Honolulu and Dallas symphonies, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the New York Chamber Symphony.

“I have been a fan of David Shifrin’s playing since the ‘80s,” said Dr. Kelly Johnson, associate professor of clarinet at UCA and the faculty sponsor for the residency. “It is a pleasure to have him on our campus. I truly appreciate the grants we have received from the College of Fine Arts and Communication, the Student Government Association and the Department of Music that made this visit possible.”

Shifrin has also performed recitals at such venues as Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall and Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall and the 92nd Street Y in New York City as well as at the Library of Congress. As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with such distinguished ensembles and artists as the Tokyo and Emerson String Quartets, Wynton Marsalis and pianists Emanuel Ax and Andre Watts.

Besides the public performance, Shifrin’s residency activities on Jan. 19, all in the Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, will include a Q&A with music students from 11-11:50 a.m.; a performance for UCA students and visiting clarinetists from 1:40-2:30 p.m.; a masterclass with college-level clarinet students from 3-5 p.m.
