CONWAY — The Department of Communication at the University of Central Arkansas will present its first Public Forum lecture of the 2011-12 academic year Thursday, Sept. 22, from 2:40-3:55 p.m. in the College of Business Room 105.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Lisa Corrigan, assistant professor of communication at the University of Arkansas. She will talk about “Afrofuturism and the Politics of Possibility: Radical Social Love and the Career of Michael Jackson.”

The lecture is free and open to the public.

“We are excited to host Dr. Lisa Corrigan,” said Dr. Jim Hikins, chair of UCA’s Department of Communication (formerly the Department of Speech and Public Relations). “Dr. Corrigan’s research focuses on gender studies, political communication and African-American rhetoric. Her work has appeared in Advances in the History of Rhetoric, Communication Quarterly, and Women & Language, and she is currently working on a book manuscript about the prison writings of the Black Power Movement.”

UCA’s Public Forum event started last year. Through it, people have a debate and/or presentation about a timely topic or feedback.

“This event is not only for students and faculty; it is open for everyone,” Hikins said.

In addition to her Public Forum lecture, Corrigan will visit classes and meet faculty from the UCA Department of Communication.
