2015 ‘Scroll’ wins national awards

2015 Scroll CoverThe 2015 Scroll, the University of Central Arkansas’s yearbook, won three Pinnacle College Media Awards — Best of Collegiate Design, sponsored by the College Media Association.

The Scroll won first place in Best Yearbook Division Page/Spread, beating entries from Texas Tech and Miami. It placed second in Best Yearbook Sports Page/Spread, finishing behind Miami and ahead of Rice; and was judged third in Best Yearbook Cover, behind Miami and Rice.

“This is the first time we have entered the competition,” said Dr. Polly Walter, faculty adviser. “The 2015 Scroll was the 100th volume of the yearbook, and the theme ‘Moments in Time’ allowed editor Will Oldham, a journalism major, and the yearbook staff the opportunity to provide historical and contemporary information spanning UCA’s long history.”

Other yearbooks placing came from the University of Texas, Roger Williams University, Baylor, Western Kentucky, Eastern Illinois and California Baptist.

The Pinnacle College Media Awards — Best of Collegiate Design honor the top two- and four-year college yearbooks, newspapers, television, radio stations, feature and literary magazines, websites and mobile apps.

At the Arkansas College Media Awards in April, Oldham was selected as Yearbook Editor of the Year and was second in the Designer of the Year category. The 2015 Scroll was honorable mention in the Yearbook General Excellence category. Scroll staffers took home individual awards in 21 yearbook categories.

“The success of Dr. Walter and her student staff is a clear indication of how she has created an environment of professionalism and journalistic integrity,” said John Gale, chair of the UCA Department of Mass Communication and Theatre. “Dr. Walter continues to be a leader in journalism higher education. Students who have had the honor to work with her clearly have developed what is needed to have future success in their journalistic careers.”
