Increasing Student Success in Developmental and College-Level Math

The National Center for Academic Transformation

March 29, 2012, Marriott Las Colinas, Dallas, TX

April 20, 2012, University of Missouri-St. Louis, MO

The National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT) is pleased to announce three, Increasing Student Success in Developmental and College-Level Math, workshops in the coming months.

Many institutions face the problem of low student success rates in both developmental and college-level math courses. NCAT has 12 years of experience in conducting large-scale course redesign programs that improve learning while reducing costs. Math redesigns at NCAT partner institutions (both two-year and four-year) have

  • increased the percentage of students successfully completing a developmental math course by 51% on average (ranging from 10% to 135%), while reducing the cost of instruction by 30% on average (ranging from 12% to 52%), and
  • increased the percentage of students successfully completing a college-level math course by 25% on average (ranging from 7% to 63%), while reducing the cost of instruction by 37% on average (ranging from 15% to 77%)

This workshop is designed for those who want to replicate those successes.

NCAT's Carolyn Jarmon will begin each workshop with an overview of what NCAT has learned about what works best in redesigning mathematics. Two Redesign Scholars representing two- and four-year institutions will then share specifics about their particular redesigns including the problem they were trying to solve, the changes they made in the content and structure of the traditional course and the results they have achieved. The workshop will include opportunities to interact with the speakers as well as to share your ideas and experiences about redesigning math. Each event will also feature exhibits by corporate members of the Redesign Alliance who offer products and services that can be used in redesigning college-level and developmental math.

If you would like to learn more about how to replicate the successes achieved by other institutions on your campus, plan to send a team to this event. This workshop is designed for faculty and administrators who are not part of a formal NCAT grant program. The goal is to introduce you to the Emporium Model and help you get started on implementation plans.

The registration fees, which cover lunch and breaks, are $100 for Redesign Alliance members and $150 for attendees whose institutions and companies are not members of the Alliance. The workshop agendas and registration information can be found by clicking on the links below:

We guarantee that you will be able to improve student success in developmental and college-level math while reducing instructional costs if you follow the advice of these pioneering institutions!

If you have questions about these events, contact Carolyn Jarmon at cjarmon@theNCAT.org. Make plans now to join your colleagues from across the country who are dedicated to improving student learning while controlling instructional costs. We look forward to seeing you!

Keynote Presentation: How Brain Research Findings Are Changing Our Understanding of Learning

Terry Doyle, Ferris State University

Almost daily neuroscience, biology and cognitive science researchers reveal new insights about how the human brain works and learns. Many of these new findings strongly suggest that current models of instruction used in higher education need to be modified and in some cases, radically changed if they are to operate in harmony with how the brain learns. This presentation will discuss many of these new research findings and suggest ways to apply them in a higher education setting. Topics will include findings on movement and exercise, stress, sleep and naps, memory enhancers, attention enhancers, use of distributed practice, importance of patterns in learning and the role of neurogenisis, neuroplasticity and genes in enhancing learning.

CONFERENCE THEME—LIFELONG LEARNING

The world in which we live is one of constant change. To survive we must keep up with it. To do more than survive—to make a living to support ourselves and our families, to understand and make wise voting decisions, and to contribute creatively and wisely to improve the culture, requires a continuous process of learning throughout our lives. And is this not one of our major goals for our students?

But what can we do in our classes to interest students in learning in general? And how can we encourage students to take advantage of learning resources after they leave us? Not just by taking more formal classes, but through informal learning opportunities…

Can humor be our ally—in class and after graduation? How about the internet, movies, television, and books? Can museums help? Social commentators? Perhaps the list is endless, but certainly worth pursuing, for achievement of this goal is critical not only to us, our children, and our students, but to everyone’s future.

We ask that you submit your proposals and presentations on this topic.

As in the past, the Conference will also stress the application of learning and motivation research and theory as well as applications of technology to higher education learning. Emphasis is on research and practice in teaching and learning with a focus on uses of innovative learning strategies and the Internet in face-to-face, blended, and online course development and instruction. We are especially interested in proposals combining innovative learning strategies such as constructivist, immersive, and cooperative learning as well as learning communities with uses of the Web and advanced technologies.

Please note: All proposals must be submitted electronically, via either the Web or email, using the Conference Proposal Submission Form. The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2011.
