PROGRAM COORDINATOR FOR ACADEMIC AND RETENTION INITIATIVES-DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND RESIDENCE LIFE

PROGRAM COORDINATOR FOR ACADEMIC AND RETENTION INITIATIVES:

The Program Coordinator for Academic and Retention Initiatives is a full time professional staff member with Housing and Residence Life. The position is responsible for providing overall departmental leadership in promoting academic success, student learning, and retention. Major responsibilities include coordination of academic and retention initiatives including: MAPWorks, Learning Assistants, and collaboration with Department of Learning Communities concerning learning communities housed in UCA Housing facilities (Residential Colleges). The position is also responsible for departmental assessment efforts and will directly supervise three graduate assistants. The Program Coordinator for Academic and Retention Initiatives serves as part of the Housing and Residence Life leadership team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. MAP-Works

• Responsible for oversight and planning of Housing and Residence Life's implementation of MAP-Works, an early warning and retention tool (a student success and retention tool) • Develop and execute implementation plan that addresses all levels of users

• Work with the Technical Administrator to ensure that all needed information is uploaded accurately into the MAP-Works system

• Create strategic marketing and incentive plan to ensure a high survey response rate

• Analyze survey results identifying trends and developing actions to address the identified needs of students

• Create a comprehensive "intervention" plan that clearly outlines expectations and roles of each Housing and Residence Life staff member as well as roles of campus partners

• Provide training sessions for various users (student staff, professional staff, campus partners)

• Prepare reports outlining the key findings for MAP- Works survey and intervention efforts

• Raise awareness throughout the institution on the role of MAP- Works in retention efforts

• Directly supervise MAP- Works graduate assistant

B. Learning Assistants

• Responsible for the overall implementation of the Learning Assistant (LA) program

• Plan and coordinate a comprehensive training program for all LAs

• Provide training to Residence Coordinators working directly with LAs

• Partner with confluence faculty to provide intentional academic support via the LAs that is relevant to confluence coursework

• Develop and consistently refine LA programmatic requirements and content

• Track LA intentional contacts and success planning

• Partner with facilities staff to maintain and improve the dedicated academic/study areas within the residence halls to ensure the space is meeting the needs of LA program and students

• Work collaboratively with academic offices including, but not limited to Enrollment

Management, the Writing Center, Math Lab, and Academic Advising

• Assist in the recruitment and selection of LAs

• Indirectly supervise and consistently meet with LA staff

C. Partnership with Department of Learning Communities

• Work as the primary liaison with the Department of Learning Communities (DLC) to strengthen and expand learning communities housed within Housing and Residence Life facilities

• Serve as contact and partner with DLC for marketing, recruitment, enrollment, and registration processes for the communities

• Establish and develop partnerships with DLC faculty and staff

• Collaborate and assist DLC with planning for academic year for residential learning communities

D. Assessment

• Facilitate consistent assessment efforts of academic and retention initiatives through surveys and focus groups

• Compile and analyze assessment results and distribute reports to Housing and Residence

Life staff and constituents

• Develop annual comprehensive summary of assessment efforts with recommendations for the consideration of Housing and Residence Life professional staff

• Directly supervise assessment graduate assistant

E. Academic and Retention Support

• Assist with the development and implementation of new initiatives that support a focus on retention such as support of first-generation college students, sophomore students, students from under-represented groups, etc.

• Compile, summarize, and distribute Housing and Residence Life retention reports each semester

• Encourage academic involvement through the creation and implementation of programs that allow residents and faculty members to interact outside the classroom and inside the residence hall environments

• Identify future opportunities to support increased student retention

F. Other Duties

• Supervise RADC (Coordinator for Recognition and Development) graduate assistant

• Prepare departmental newsletter to be distributed to campus community

• Collaborate with Housing and Residence Life staff on projects and initiatives as needed

• Assist with the recruitment, hiring, and training of student staff

• Chair, advise, and/or serve on departmental, divisional, or university committees as invited or assigned

• Serve as part of emergency response team for Housing and Residence Life

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree with a major in sociology, public administration, or related field; plus two years of experience in program administration or related area. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  An applicant having a master’s degree in student development or related field and three or more years of experience within Student Affairs or Housing and Residence Life is preferred. The demonstrated ability to blend the academic and residential components of student life is highly desired. A proven development of administrative skills, commitment to diversity, organizational skills, sound written and oral expression, crisis management skills, supervision and training experience, and a command of current knowledge and trends in student development and retention are needed in this challenging position.
