EDUCATION COUNSELOR-ACADEMIC ADVISING CENTER
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Academic Advisor is responsible for testing, assessing, and advising individuals and providing group education and career guidance services. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS: Compiles, organizes, and analyzes information about individuals through records, test, interviews and professional sources to assess student interest, aptitudes, abilities and personality characteristics and determine educational placement for students. Provides career counseling to students regarding chosen vocation by assisting students in assessment interpretation and program selection, providing information on academic support resources, university policies and referring students to financial aid, other university services. Counsels special needs and at-risk students individually or in group sessions concerning social, civic, personal, and education problems and refers student to alternate sources for assistance. Works with instructors for special needs students and monitors program progress. Advises and educates students and other interest groups through presentations and workshops. Responsible for maintaining confidential student records via UCA's student database system. Assist instructors in obtaining and compiling student follow-up information. When possible, attends seminars, workshops and conferences to professional development, networking opportunities, appropriate credentials and assist with special school functions. Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKillS: Knowledge of academic advising, student assessment, job placement, career opportunities and evaluation. Knowledge of the principles and practices of academic advising and assessment. Ability to prepare, present and review oral and written information. Ability to develop, monitor and evaluate educational programs. Ability to obtain and provide information, guidance, and counseling to students. Core competencies include (but not limited to) good listening skills, patience, compassion, integrity and trust with the ability to manage diversity and motive others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The formal education equivalent of a Master's Degree, plus 1 year experience in academic advising or a related field. Additional requirements include strong computer skills.
