Effective Immediately
Hoverboards, including electronic skateboards, self-balancing boards, and other similar equipment, may not be stored or possessed inside any university building and/or charged anywhere on campus.
This action is being taken due to a potential fire hazard. The National Fire Protection Agency issued fire safety warnings for hoverboards in December 2015, and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is conducting a safety review of hoverboards and investigating complaints of injuries and spontaneous combustion. Recently, numerous colleges and universities have adopted bans or restrictions on hoverboards. University officials will continue to monitor safety updates regarding these devices.
The use of hoverboards on campus falls under Board Policy 423, which already prohibits the use of such devices within any building on campus. The use of hoverboards is permitted on any sidewalk or improved surface used for pedestrian purposes.
