Mike Schaefer received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. At UCA, where he has taught since 1989, he specializes in American literature of the colonial period and the nineteenth century. He is also strongly committed to the English department’s general-education offerings, particularly World Lit II and Introduction to Literature. He has published books and articles on Stephen Crane, Ambrose Bierce, John W. De Forest, and others; he is currently in the early stages of work on a book on modern novels about the American Civil War. He has served terms as president of the UCA Faculty Senate and of the Arkansas Conference of the American Association of University Professors.
