UCA Community School of Music

Celebrating 25 years of providing exceptional music instruction in Central Arkansas!

Music  Instruction for Children, Teens, and Adults

Music lessons help children build confidence and communication skills, develop focused listening skills and foster creativity.  Adults can improve or learn new skills and keep their brains active in a new way.  Research also seems to indicate that when the elderly take music lessons, anxiety and depression are reduced.  Music is good for every age!

  • Private instruction is available for students of all ages and ability levels in piano, voice, mandolin, fiddle, guitar, harp (on demand) and most band and orchestral instruments.  Tuition costs depend upon the level or type of instruction you or your family member prefer.  Students receive a  weekly lesson (30, 45 or 60 minutes).  Our instructors are professionally trained in the technique and repertoire of their instrument.  Recital performance is available at the end of each semester with the approval of the instructor.   A list of instructors is available on our "Instructors" link. Tuition costs are listed below by level of instructor.

  • Voices of Central Arkansas (VOCA) – Now entering its 19th year, our Award-winning Choral Ensemble program promotes musical literacy and performance by providing a challenging, high quality, choral experience for its members.  In the past year, VOCA has performed with the Conway Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Ballet, the Conway Men’s Chorus and in concert at Carnegie Hall.  In addition to the Choristers training choir and Concert Choir for grades 3-9, we have an excellent Youth Choir for 10-12th graders under the VOCA umbrella.  Rehearsals begin Sept. 8th, 6-7:30 pm, with an ice cream social to welcome our parents and students.  Call 501-450-5755 or 450-3672 to schedule an audition on Aug. 19, 20, or 21.  Openings from 4-6pm each day.  The Director will hear current students  Aug. 25-27, in groups of up to 3 students. Choristers who wish to move up to Concert Choir may audition either week. See audition details at https://uca.edu/csm/central-arkansas-childrens-choir/ and check us out on FB. S. Cook-Cunningham,C, Marten; SFA 107, 125, 316.

  • Beginner Guitar Class:  Join our popular 12-week beginner guitar class, for students ages 14 and up; Thursdays, 6:30-7:30pm.  Learn chords, how to read both the staff and tab, and develop the skills to play a number of popular pieces.   Students are encouraged to bring an acoustic guitar for the class.  A materials fee of $7 is payable to the instructor at the first class, and is not included in the tuition costs.   Nate Mathews, SFA 125.

  • Music Reading 101:  Four weekly classes for students who want to learn to read music and understand the basics of music theory and what all those black marks mean!  Group Instruction:  For students age 16 and up.  Our 1-hour classes begin in September: Monday evenings, TBA.  Mariana Aun

  • Alexander Technique Lessons (private and group):  For performers and non-performers alike – students develop skills to aid in the prevention or reduction of injuries, lessen bouts of tension headaches, overcome repetitive strain, promote endurance and help access new reserves of power and expression. Both private and group classes are available; check our link for additional tuition information, including our Free Trial lesson offer.  Rates vary depending upon number of classes – we offer both a student discount and a UCA employee discount.  Email cliffordhicks@me.com  to set up a Free Trial lesson or for additional information.  Cliff Hicks

  • Suzuki Violin is an excellent option for the younger child. Children learn music just as they learn their own language, through listening, encouragement, and repetition in practice.  Tuesday evenings; for children ages 4 and up.  Private instruction with occasional group lessons included after the first semester.  Catherine Becker.

  • Little Mozart Pre-Piano Class:  This 6-week group class is for the child in grades K-2 this fall.  A fun introduction to the keyboard and an excellent program to determine readiness for piano lessons. Tuesday, 5:00-5:30pm.  First class, Sept. 2. Terrie Shires

Tuition costs are listed below.  Private lesson costs are based on the education and experience level of the instructor.  The faculty of the UCA Community School of Music is made up of current members of the faculty of the UCA Department of Music, visiting instructors, and selected graduate and undergraduate music students recommended by our faculty members.

 INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

If the UCA Campus closes for inclement weather, the CSM office will be closed.  Lessons will be canceled out of concern for the safety of our students and teachers, due to potentially hazardous road conditions related to the winter weather expected.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.  If conditions improve and streets are clear after a closing has been announced, you may contact your teacher or your teacher may contact you about possibly having lessons.  Otherwise, enjoy the time off and be safe if you must get out.
