2014 Chinese Bridge Summer Camp for

U.S. High School Students (Arkansas Area)



I Aims of the program

It is aimed to enhance the communication between Chinese and U.S. High School students, and to further deepen the understanding of American high school students to Chinese language and culture, so as to stimulate their enthusiasm for study.


II Date and Place

Time: July 17 to August 1, 2014

Venue: To be confirmed

III Scale of the Activity

It is planned to invite 700 high school students including leading teachers, and the ratio for teachers and students is about 1:10 to China for the summer camp.

10 students minimal in the state of Arkansas.


IV Organizers

Sponsor: Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban)

Co-organizer: Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) in U.S. and designated American high schools.


V Registration Requirements

1. High school student need to meet the following conditions:

1) The United States Citizenship

2) High school student between 14 and 18 years old (grades 9-12), including the graduate grade 12 and the student who will be Grade 9 in the coming summer

3) Non-native Chinese who has been learning Chinese less than three years

4) Student who is interested in Chinese language and culture

5) In good health and suitable for international travel


2. Leading teacher need to meet the following conditions:

1) Respect and understand Chinese culture

2) With affinity, sense of responsibility and strong communication skills

3) At least one year experience in teaching kids of K-12

4) Possess rich experience in student management

5) In good health and suitable for international travel


3. Leading teacher need to perform following duties:

1) Assist Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) to implement pre-departure training to the students

2) Participate in all camp activities and comply with activity regulations

3) Assume major management responsibilities and be responsible for the safety of students in China

4) Help students adapt to the environment and direct student behavior

5) Accompany students in case of emergency and undertake liaison work

6) Collect the feedback from the campers on the overall activities of summer camp and submit final report to Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) and designated American high schools after the event

VI  Application and Selection Approach

1. The application for the student through Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) and/or designated American high schools should include the application form (see attachment 1), personal application form, and a letter of recommendation from teacher or school. The leading teacher should submit the application form (see attachment 2) and resume to Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) and designated American high schools.

2. Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) and designated American high schools should identify qualified candidates according to the preliminary review of application documents, and should also submit the candidate information summary (see attachment 3), together with the application documents (scanning copies), to the Confucius Institute Headquarters for review by April 30.

3. The Confucius Institute Headquarters will inform each Confucius Institute (Classroom) and designated high school the result of final review. Each Confucius Institute (Classroom) and/or designated high school should sign an exemption agreement and a letter of commitment to the code of conduct with the selected student and his/her parent.

4. The higher number of the participants for each Confucius Institute (Classroom) or designated high school cannot lower than 10 or than 35 including teachers. In addition, each Confucius Institute (Classroom) is encouraged to recruit students and leading teachers based on school. The parents of the student, the relatives of the leading teacher and other unqualified persons are not allowed to participate in the summer camp activity.


VII Costs of the Activity

Teachers and students shall purchase their own round-trip international fights, international travel insurance, as well as pay visa related costs. The Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) will pay the costs for accommodation, transportation, activities and excursions in the itinerary during the period in China excluding medical expenses.

Registration fee: $50.00 (cash or money order)


VIII. Power of Interpretation

The Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) will enjoy the right of final interpretation of the provisions in the brochure and the program of activities for summer camp.
