November 2 to 4, 2012 – The U.S. South Confucius Institute Directors Conference was held at Georgia State University in Atlanta from Friday November 2 to Sunday, November 4. The conference was sponsored by the Chinese Consulate located in Houston, Texas and hosted by the Confucius Institute at Georgia State University. About 30 people from the thirteen Confucius Institutes in eight states were in attendance. Mr. Yiqun Zhang, Chief Consul of Education, was accompanied by Ms. Baiyu Xu, Consul of Education, and Mr. Haibo Zhou, Consul of Education from the Chinese Consulate, in giving the opening remarks. Dr. Guo-ou Zhuang, Director of the Confucius Institute for Arkansas, presented the programs and events the Confucius Institute has hosted during 2012 as well as future plans for the Institute. Ms. Xiaohong Lu, the newly appointed Deputy Director of the Confucius Institute for Arkansas was present at the conference. There was a lively discussion on the sustainability and further development of Confucius Institutes as well as how they are integrating in their current, local communities. Various directors appealed to Hanban, the Confucius Institute’s governing body, to facilitate further cooperation between Chinese and American universities.
