BIT Club's Last Meeting of the Semester

The Business & Information Technology (BIT) Club is having its last meeting on Tuesday, April 16th. The event, which will be held in the College of Business Auditorium (Rooms 107/208) during X-period (1:40 - 2:30 p.m.), is open to all majors on campus. Zac Taylor and Allison Nicholas, both of Acxiom Corporation, will be the featured speakers. Acxiom hires more UCA graduates than from any other school and we are proud to welcome them back to campus. In addition, we will discuss our upcoming field trip to the Acxiom Data Center in Conway on Tuesday, April 23rd. Refreshments will be served (PIZZA!) and door prizes will be awarded. All students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend.

Former Governor Mike Huckabee Guest Speaker

Centennial Bank hosted a fund raising event honoring Johnny Allison and his entrepreneurial success. Former Governor Mike Huckabee was the featured speaker for the event and we had between 25 and 30 students in attendance and a packed house in McCastlain Hall.

The event raised $252,000 that will all go into the John W. Allison Entrepreneur Endowed Professorship Fund. Centennial Bank covered 100% of the expenses for the event and 100% of the revenue raised ($252k) will go into this newly created endowment. Half of the money came from selling tables and the other half was a matching gift from the Allison family.

Economics Professor Named to Public Choice Society Board

Noel Campbell, professor of economics at UCA, was appointed to the Executive Committee’s Board of Directors (2012-2015) of the Public Choice Society during the Society’s 50th anniversary conference. The Public Choice Society was created by the late Nobel Laureate economist, James Buchanan, on the basis of “methodological individualism, rational choice, and politics-as-exchange.” The Public Choice Society is affiliated with the Springer journals Public Choice, Constitutional Political Economy, and the Review of Austrian Economics.

UCA's Beta Alpha Psi Chapter takes a first place during conference

The University of Central Arkansas’ chapter of Beta Alpha Psi — the honorary organization for Financial Information students and professionals — earned a first-place award recently at the organization’s 2013 Southwest Regional Conference in Dallas.

UCA students Amber Brewer, Kaci Burrow and Kristen Flynn were awarded first place in the Best Practices competition in the category of Innovation in Developing Soft Skills, according to a news release. The three made a presentation based on a program the UCA chapter of Beta Alpha Psi developed to improve communication skills of its members. Six other schools competed in this category.

Two College of Business Economics Students Present Research...

Two College of Business Economics students presented research that they have co-authored with UCA faculty at the 50th annual meeting of the Public Choice Society in New Orleans, Louisiana, March 7-10, 2013. Britney Logan presented her paper "Does Interest Group Sclerosis Occur via New Business Venturing" (co-authored with Dr. Noel Campbell). Stephen Gross presented "Public Corruption in a Standard Model of Business Venturing" (co-authored with Dr. Noel Campbell). Both papers were well received by the conference attendees. Both students travel and conference fees were paid for through a grant Dr. David Mitchell received to support undergraduate economics research at UCA from the Koch Charitable Trust Foundation.

The UCA Business & Information Technology (BIT) Club is having their third meeting of the semester on Tuesday, March 12th. The event, which will be held in the College of Business Auditorium (Rooms 107/208) during X-period (1:40 - 2:30 p.m.), is open to all majors on campus. Phi Beta Lambda is co-hosting the event. We are pleased to welcome Mr. Stephen Svetz from the Attorney General's Office as our featured speaker. Mr. Svetz will be speaking on Identity Theft and will offer valuable insights from his experience working for the state of Arkansas. Refreshments will be served and door prizes will be awarded. All students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend.

The Business & Information Technology (BIT) Club is having its second meeting on Tuesday, February 19th. The event, which will be held in the College of Business Auditorium (Rooms 107/208) during X-period (1:40 - 2:30 p.m.), is open to all majors on campus. We are delighted to welcome Mr. Juan Lopez Jr., CISSP, as our featured speaker. Juan is currently a cyberspace research engineer at the Air Force Institute of Technology’s Center for Cyberspace Research where he conducts applied research in Critical Infrastructure Protection of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) modeling of 4G wireless systems. Refreshments will be served and door prizes will be awarded. All students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend.

Professor George Selgin is a Professor of Economics at the University of Georgia. His research covers a broad range of topics including monetary theory, monetary history, macroeconomic policy, and the history of monetary thought.

He has written or edited seven books including The Theory of Free Banking and Good Money: Birmingham Button Makers, the Royal Mint, and the Beginnings of Modern Coinage, 1775-1821. He has over 60 academic articles.

His writings appear in The Christian Science Monitor, The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other popular outlets. Professor Selgin holds a Ph.D. in economics from New York University.

Wes Kemp, retired president and CEO of ABF Freight System, will be a guest speaker in my Transportation class on March 13th at 3PM in the College of Business auditorium.

Mr. Kemp's lecture will focus on capitalism and its virtues. He recently taught a class on Capitalism and the Supply Chain at the University of Arkansas and, having personally heard his views on the subject at a different venue, his lecture promises to be both informative and enjoyable.

ABF Freight System (Ft. Smith, AR) is the largest subsidiary of Arkansas Best Corporation, the 5th largest LTL trucking company, and the 13th largest overall trucking company in the United States as ranked by Transport Topics. Mr. Kemp took over ABF during the recession in 2010 and guided the company back to profitability before retiring in December 2011. His career with ABF spanned over 40 years.
