M91-08 – ROBERT ARMSTRONG DOYLE COLLECTION

The Robert A. Doyle Papers are a collection of the papers, correspondence, and photographs of the Doyle Family, a prominent family of Little Rock, Arkansas.  Robert Armstrong Doyle, the son of Thomas Newsam Doyle and Lula Watkins Doyle, is the subject and source of much of the collection.

Doyle was born on June 7, 1892, in Morrilton, Arkansas.  He attended Cornell University, graduating in 1915, and also attended Eastman Business College for a time.

Doyle enlisted in the Army Officer Training School on May 8, 1917, and was commissioned in the 352nd Field Artillery Brigade in August of 1917.  He was later assigned to Command Headquarters Company, 182 F.A. Brigade, under General Richmond P. Davis.  During World War I Doyle served in Europe as a Battalion Commander at Camp de Souge, Bordeaux, France.  As commander of the Second Battalion of the 151st Field Artillery, Doyle was stationed at Rupt en Woevre, where he remained until the armistice.  At this time he returned to Staff Duty and detailed to England for study at the University of London in March 1919.  Doyle returned to the United States as a Casual Officer and discharged May 19, 1919 ay Camp Dix, New Jersey.

Doyle then worked in his family business, Doyle-Kidd Dry Goods Company of Little Rock, until 1921 when he moved to New York City and was employed by Associated Dry Goods Corporation.  He later worked for Lord and Taylor, James McCreery and Company, and Hayne and Company.  In 1931 he became President of the Orange-Crush Company and remained its executive until 1941.

In 1942 Doyle again enlisted in the United States Army to serve in Army Intelligence in South America during World War II.  He served on the staff of General George Marshall.

Doyle returned to Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1948, where he remained until his death August 25, 1990.  During his lifetime he toured Alaska, Europe, Africa, the Near East, Australia, Central Asia, and even ventured beyond the Iron Curtain.
