This collection consists of materials relating to the life of Constance Mitchell, a well known teacher and librarian at Arkansas State Teachers College, (now UCA). The materials consist of her last Will and Testament, and newspaper clipping (the collection is expected to grow as new materials are acquired).
Miss Mitchell received an AB degree from Illinois Wesleyan College, an MA from George Peabody College, and a bachelor of Library Science degree from the University of Illinois. She began her career at ASTC as an English teacher in 1929, and in 1941 became head librarian of the college’s Torreyson Library. She also sponsored the girls’ basketball team and led them to two state championships. Her interest in libraries was not confined only to the university level, but also on the community and state level as well. She was an active member of the Arkansas Library Association, and worked hard at establishing and maintaining libraries throughout the state. She retired in 1954, and died April 15, 1976.
