M89-26 – UNITED DAUGTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY, ARKANSAS DIVISION COLLECTION

The collection consists of materials relating to the history of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Arkansas Division, a chapter of one of the oldest Southern women’s societies.  The materials are mainly programs from their annual conventions and a pamphlet, written by a member that records Arkansas’ historic locations.

The UDC was founded in 1894 with the combining of members from already existing groups of women who were dedicated to honoring the memory of the Confederacy.  The group’s main purposes are erecting and preserving Confederate landmarks and graves, and stimulating the study and writing of books about the Confederacy.  The Arkansas chapter was organized at Hope in 1896, and still exists today.  The groups’ main goal is to preserve Arkansas’ Confederate history.
