Pre-Pharmacy

Are you looking for a career combining the challenges and rewards of chemistry and medicine? The Pre-Pharmacy program at the University of Central Arkansas offers an excellent scientific curriculum, designed to fully prepare you for a professional pharmacy program. Our pre-professional major provides a broad theoretical knowledge, including courses in: chemistry, biochemistry, physics, biology, calculus for life sciences, economics, writing, speech, technical literature, genetics, pathophysiology, and logic; as well as unique research and experiential opportunities. Graduates from our program may be placed in a number of pharmacy programs across the state and around the country, with particular success in the University of Arkansas Medical School’s College of Pharmacy.

In the Pre-Pharmacy program at UCA, you’ll have access to all of the distinct advantages that make the UCA experience special. Just a few of the benefits of our program include:

  • Expert Faculty with diverse academic and professional credentials, who are dedicated to cutting-edge research and the success of their students both in the classroom and in the future. Our instructors have cultivated a rigorous applied and experimental learning environment, actively engaging students in classroom projects using state-of-the-art lab equipment, such as the scanning electron microscope; undergraduate research opportunities (sometimes paid) as individuals, with peers, and alongside faculty members; and outreach projects in the area, such as volunteer placement in local hospitals. UCA professors also provide a supportive environment for students through individual attention, mentoring, and connections within the community.
  • Professional Development through participation in the Pre-Pharmacy Club and the UCA Chapter of the American Chemical Society. These student organizations are very active in community service, such as scientific demonstrations for elementary school children, and provide guidance to their members regarding the pharmaceutical profession. Just some of its activities include: tours of area medical facilities and pharmacies; tutoring other Chemistry and Pre-Pharmacy students; inviting scientific and medical guest speakers and local pharmacists to campus to present research, hold student workshops, discuss employment opportunities and the pharmaceutical profession, and to share perspectives on current events and issues within the discipline; and conducting research experiments and studies, often leading to presentation of student data findings at regional and even national chemistry and pharmacy conferences.
  • Employment Opportunities: students are encouraged to gain experience through employment with local pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies in the region during their undergraduate study, which provides them with valuable field experience, a proven work record, community connections in the industry, and can even lead to permanent employment. Graduates from our program can continue their professional degrees at a number of top institutions, like the University of Arkansas Medical School’s College of Pharmacy and a similar program at Harding University, and become licensed with a clinical doctorate in pharmacy (Pharm D.). UCA alumni are employed at a variety of pharmaceutical companies throughout Arkansas and across the country in positions with starting yearly salaries approaching $115,000.
